Transmembrane Ion and Water Measurement System (TWIMS)
Our proprietary tracer dye technology enables the simultaneous measurement of the transport of minute quantities of solutes and solvents across membranes in both directions.
Specifications
Number of tissues to be measured simultaneously: 2
Types of tissues: native epithelial membranes and monolayer polarized cell cultures
Thermodynamically closed system, media maintained at 37 ± 0.2 o C or specified temperature.
Real-time, bi-directional water flux measurements together with electro-physiological measurements: voltage and short circuit current, with automatic and dynamic adjustment of fluid resistance in real time.
Unattenuated fluorescence measurements of the water flux; r esolution of water flux measurements: 1 m l /min/cm 2
Automated virtual instrumentation platform with 8 channels processed in real time.
Volume of the luminal and basolateral chamber < 3 ml.
Built in voltage and current Ag/AgCl electrode ports at the luminal and basolateral chambers
Built in fluid exchange ports
Sufficient oxygenation of the media on both sides of the 2 membranes will be maintained.
One quick-lock mechanism for holding all 4 chambers in place.
One “click-on” mechanism to lock the fluid circulation and temperature control reservoir system to the 2 - tissue chamber system.
Applications
- Biomedical
- Measurement of the bi-directional water transport (<1µl/cm2/minute) across living tissues, as well as their electrophysiological properties
- Measurement of the transport of drugs and other solutes across living tissues
- Studies of the mechanisms and the efficacy of drugs designed to treat such water transport-related diseases such as cystic fibrosis, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, asthma, diarrhea, diseases of the kidney, and dry eye syndrome
- Industrial
- Measurement of permeability coefficients of filters and membranes
